‘American Sniper’ Lives Up to Its Buzz

American Sniper

Rolling Stone magazine said it takes a bite out of you, and that pretty well sums it up. American Sniper  isn’t a film you’ll enjoy, but it’s one you can respect, even if you do leave the theater feeling maimed. The greatest overall compliment I’d give director Clint Eastwood is that he simply pulled the curtain back to show us a brave man on a brutal journey – no sermons from the left or the right; just a stark portrait which you can approve or condemn. Eastwood reports, you decide. Continue Reading

The Walking Wounded

Walking Wounded

“Without your wound where would your power be? The very angels themselves cannot persuade the wretched and blundering children on earth as can one human being broken on the wheels of living. In love’s service only the wounded soldiers can serve.” -Thornton Wilder Now I see why I always cry at the end of Our Town. Thornton Wilder had a grasp on language and the human soul which leaves me flabbergasted. And he’s bringing up something in this quote I’ve thought over for years, and have reluctantly come to believe: my best qualities spring Continue Reading

In Search of Stability

Waters

“Unstable as water, you shall not excel.” -Genesis 49:4 When Jacob was dying, he called his sons together for blessings and predictions. He began with his firstborn Reuben, who should have received double inheritance and assumed spiritual headship of the family once his father passed. Recognizing his great potential, Jacob declared “You are my might, the beginning of my strength, the excellency of dignity and the excellency of power.” Continue Reading

Sinner and a Movie

Railway Man

With movies like God’s Not Dead, Heaven is for Real and Noah dominating our conversations about the Bible and the box office, one quiet little film has, I think, slipped past a lot of folk’s radars. Which is too bad, because of all the current films touching on faith, I think this one delivers the most impact, even though it’s not billed as a Christian film, nor does it clearly promote the gospel. Continue Reading

Fred Phelps: The Symptom of our Sickness

“I'll explain, and I'll be sure to use small words so that you'll be sure to understand. You wart-hog-faced-buffoon!” - The Princess Bride Buffoons have their place, but they shouldn’t. They contribute nothing but noise and, accomplished only in the art of the obnoxious, they pass gas and call it an insight. They both earn and love our contempt; they’re revolting. So when they exit, tears are hardly expected. Fred Phelps, founder and head buffoon of the Westboro Baptist God-Hates-Fags cult, has exited, and tears are few. His notoriety Continue Reading

To Love, Honor and Downton Abbey

downton_abbey

Every Tuesday we’ll post something to do with strengthening marriages. Hope it helps. — To Love, Honor and Downton Abbey I’d been conked out for nearly an hour when Renee’s outraged cry jolted me upright. A scream in the house usually means there’s been an accident, and in this case it was severe. Matthew had just been hit by an oncoming truck en route from his wife and beautiful newborn son, leaving the estate’s financial affairs in question since he had been such a stabilizing influence, and adding untold pressure to Lady Cora and Continue Reading

Wrath

Sad and angry looking man

Every Thursday I’ll post an article having to do with either relational or emotional matters. Hope it helps. — Wrath “For the wrath of man does not work the righteousness of God.” - James 1:20 A YouTube video which went viral last January should sicken anyone with an ounce of respect for our nation, the military, or humans in general. In it, four unidentified Marines are shown desecrating the corpses of fallen Taliban soldiers, smirkingly telling them to “have a nice day” when they’re finished. It’s generated outrage from all Continue Reading
