The Best, Not the Most

Cher in "Moonstruck"

“So maybe my nature does draw me to you. That doesn’t mean I have to go with it. I can say yes to some things, and no to some things that are gonna ruin everything. I can do that. Otherwise, you know, what good is this life God gave us?” -from the film “Moonstruck”   Continue Reading

Wrath

Wrath

“For the wrath of man does not work the righteousness of God.” - James 1:20 Some stories put me in touch with my inner murderer. This one’s a pretty good example. Continue Reading

Digested But Untested

Glasses on Bible 2

“Believers think of themselves as individuals first, Americans second, and Christians third. Until that prioritization is rearranged, the Church will continue to lose influence, and biblical principles will represent simply one more option among the numerous worldviews that Americans may choose from." - George Barna “Prove all things; hold fast what is good.” - I Thessalonians 5: 21 Ask a roomful of believers if they’re all on the same page, and they’re likely to say yes. Ask them to then read aloud from the page they’re on individually, Continue Reading

When ‘My Bad’ Really Is Bad

“Keep in mind that when sin is viewed superficially, it is dealt with superficially.”  -Erwin W. Lutzer When something gets me really mad, or really scared, I do something about it. When something seems technically wrong but excusable, I shrug it off. So what I deal with seriously, combining decision and action, tells you a lot about what really matters to me and what doesn’t. When Consciences Collide: Making Sense of the Indiana Religious Freedom Restoration Act

Indiana

“It behooves every man who values liberty of conscience for himself, to resist invasions of it in the case of others.” -Thomas Jefferson Been There, Done That Had That Done to Me Amidst all of today’s clamor over discrimination based on religious or moral standards, I’m remembering an incident when I was on the receiving end of it myself. The Water Walk

Waves

Let’s revisit an amazing story which, I think, has a lot to say to a Christian guy struggling to keep it clean. Fresh off one of history’s most triumphal luncheons (see Matthew 14:16-21, where five thousand dined on two loaves and three fishes) the disciples, at Christ’s specific command, took off in a boat for the other side of the lake around sundown. (vs.23) Their obedience drove them straight into the arms of catastrophe. A storm hit, the waves swelled, and by 3am they were still only midway across, exhausted and bewildered. Jesus Continue Reading

Lord of the Bruised

Reeds

A bruised reed He will not break, and smoking flax He will not quench, till He sends forth justice to victory. -Matthew 12:20 I want that kind of heart. I want to look at a bruised reed and feel protective, appreciating its fragility and its potential. Without that, everything else seems empty. These words from Isaiah 42, re-quoted in Matthew, are interesting, aren’t they? “A bruised reed He will not break.” Matthew cites this as a prophetic reference to Jesus, and it’s important to note this description comes right after a heated Continue Reading

Andrae Crouch: My Own Tribute

Andrae

I thank God for the mountains, I thank Him for the valleys And I thank Him for the storms He’s brought me through ‘Cause if I’d never had a problem I’d never know that God could solve them I’d never know what faith in His word can do. -"Through It All"  by Andrae crouch I’d say he built all of us up, some a little, some, like me, an awful lot. Music permeates, after all, so when musicians birth great songs, they settle into our lives and literally become part of us. That’s why you can still remember tunes that got you through a rough Continue Reading
