The Confident Heart

For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God. (I John 3:20-21)   John says, in the verse quoted above, that if my heart does not condemn me, then I have confidence towards God. Sounds nice. But how can my heart not condemn me? Continue Reading

The Angry Wife

conflict

It seems nothing works with her. A kind word is met with a rebuff. Touching and lovemaking are out of the question. Any little thing (or nothing at all) seems to set her off, and she’s willing to shout, accuse or cut down at a moment’s notice. She’s an angry wife, and she’s not alone. Plenty of marriages are falling apart, largely because of a husband’s sin, a wife’s ongoing anger over the sin, and the couple’s inability to deal with the fallout. What to do? In fairness, let’s first admit that some men and women are simply angry people. Continue Reading

The Walking Wounded

Walking Wounded

“Without your wound where would your power be? The very angels themselves cannot persuade the wretched and blundering children on earth as can one human being broken on the wheels of living. In love’s service only the wounded soldiers can serve.” -Thornton Wilder Now I see why I always cry at the end of Our Town. Thornton Wilder had a grasp on language and the human soul which leaves me flabbergasted. And he’s bringing up something in this quote I’ve thought over for years, and have reluctantly come to believe: my best qualities spring Continue Reading

Releasing Your Wounder

forgive

We’ve all got them – wounds, past injuries of the soul that still show themselves, either in the way we relate, or the pain we feel. I've learned a lot by examining my own, and those of the people I've been blessed to work with over the years. Continue Reading

The Intimate Enemy

“Husbands, love your wives”, Paul admonishes in Colossians 3:19. Well, we’ve heard that before, but then he adds an interesting challenge: “—and be not bitter towards them.” Hmmm. As a former Pharisee, Paul had almost certainly been married at one time, then probably widowed. He knew something firsthand about men and women, and the dynamics that come between them, and from that knowledge sprang a command to men not to be bitter towards their wives – spoken, it seems, with the assumption that bitterness can be a common problem to husbands. You’re Grounded!

lemon tree

That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,  may be able to comprehend with all saints what [is] the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;  and to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fullness of God. - Ephesians 3:17-19 There’s a large flowerpot in my backyard, perched a few yards from my lemon tree, both of which have been there for decades. Both are part of the yard, certainly,  but one of them is portable, while the other, deeply Continue Reading

He’s Just Not That Into Him

Tired.

A book and subsequent film titled “He’s Just Not That Into You” looked at the phenomena of single women who find it hard to accept the fact that when a man doesn’t return phone calls, breaks promises to get in touch, or keeps making excuses for not getting together, it doesn’t mean he had a car accident. Nor was he kidnapped, drugged, or overcome with the flu. It simply means he’s not that into you. Brutal fact, but there it is, and it’s better faced than avoided. Continue Reading

Lessons from the Apes

Planet of the Apes

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes seems to be the current rage, topping box office records and offering an impressive array of special effects, costuming and makeup. We saw it last night, and I’d say its reception is well earned, since it’s beautifully acted and extremely well paced. (And the apes are flat-out amazing, conveying unmistakeable emotions with little more than grunts and facial expressions, so kudos to whoever handled the prosthetics and the actors who managed them.) I’d recommend it for those elements alone. Continue Reading

Guest posting by Renee Dallas Note from Joe: I’ve received a number of messages from wives asking for help dealing with their own pain over their husband’s behavior, so  thought I’d let my own wife Renee respond with some ideas she has on the subject, since she runs a ministry to wives.
