Reparative Therapy: What it Is, What it Isn’t, Why it Matters (Part One of a Five Part Series)

Then said Evangelist, 'If this by thy condition, why standest thou still?' He answered, 'Because I know not where to go.' -Pilgrim's Progress Been There, Done That, Thank God Thirty one years ago I asked for help, and I got it. Continue Reading

We Who Are Seen

Jesus hand

“And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, “Thou God seest me” For she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me?” - Genesis 16:13 Hagar isn’t the most sympathetic of Bible characters. Handmaid to Abraham’s barren wife Sarah, she had become pregnant by Abraham at Sarah’s insistence. (Genesis 16:1-2) You’ll remember that God had promised them a son, but Sarah, like so many of us, liked God’s promise, but not His timing. In her impatience she basically said, “Let’s help God along. He said we’d have a son but I’m still Continue Reading

Gotta Serve Somebody

For the married man who's let his wife down, there can be a real helplessness that goes along with repentance. You know you’ve messed up, you’ve apologized every which way you can, and you’ve taken some concrete steps to get help. You’ve joined an accountability group, you’ve gotten yourself an accountability partner, you’re in counseling, and you make sure that on a daily basis you’re in the Word and praying. But you’re still in the dog house. She says she forgives you, then she rips into you with a fresh round of questions. (“How could you Continue Reading

Time to Run?

Wallbuilding

“Should such a man as I flee?” –Nehemiah 6: 11           Nehemiah had it rough. His passion was to rebuild; the distractions and opposition along the way were relentless. First, since Israel’s enemies hated the idea of the Hebrews regaining their city’s fortification, they tried every trick in the book – mocking, threats, slander – to keep Jerusalem’s walls from going up. Second, in the midst of rebuilding he discovered that some wealthy Israelites were exploiting their own brethren through high interest mortgages; some had also intermarried Continue Reading

You’re Grounded!

lemon tree

That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,  may be able to comprehend with all saints what [is] the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;  and to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fullness of God. - Ephesians 3:17-19 There’s a large flowerpot in my backyard, perched a few yards from my lemon tree, both of which have been there for decades. Both are part of the yard, certainly,  but one of them is portable, while the other, deeply Continue Reading

The Irrational Bible

Irrational Bible

"I have no more ability to believe --- that the first people on earth were a couple named Adam and Eve that lived 6,000 years ago. I have no ability to believe that there was a flood that covered all the highest mountains of the world only 4,000 years ago and that all of the animal species that exist today are here because they were carried on an arc ---” -Christian musician Michael Gungor  To me, one of the scariest trends in modern Christian thinking is the notion that it’s less important what you believe, and more important how you believe Continue Reading

He’s Just Not That Into Him

Tired.

A book and subsequent film titled “He’s Just Not That Into You” looked at the phenomena of single women who find it hard to accept the fact that when a man doesn’t return phone calls, breaks promises to get in touch, or keeps making excuses for not getting together, it doesn’t mean he had a car accident. Nor was he kidnapped, drugged, or overcome with the flu. It simply means he’s not that into you. Brutal fact, but there it is, and it’s better faced than avoided. Continue Reading

The Cruelest Lie

arbeit macht frei

It hung over the entrance to Auschwitz, a large metal sign handmade by prisoners, offering a last shred of false hope to the doomed: “Arbeit macht frei” (“work makes you free”). Some have argued it was placed there to deceive inmates into thinking hard work would earn them a release, while others argue the saying was a common slogan extolling the virtue of labor. Either way, it was damnably false, a sick joke and the cruelest of lies. Because, of course, work made no one free in Auschwitz. You were there to be worked to death, or put to death. Continue Reading
